Making Waves: Time Bessell’s “Addictions”

Custom surfboards are like fine art, so it’s no wonder La Jolla’s legendary surfboard maker, Tim Bessell, is turning heads out of the water at art galleries around town. His installations, paintings and mixed-media creations have been shown alongside the likes of Shepard Fairey at the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art.

Besides spoofing machine guns on “guns” for riding big waves, Bessell will exhibit his latest work, “Addictions,” at Robin’s Nest (6905 La Jolla Blvd.) on August 13. “I want my work to raise the collective consciousness to the addictions that face all of us,” says Bessell. The show will feature an oversized epoxy Adderall tab filled with skulls—and paintings of vices including Bessell’s own surfing addiction.
