Are you having a HOT GIRL summer?

Shelby at the pool

I’ve been seeing thongs, speedos, and wild beach attire everywhere, and I am loving the joy people are having getting out there… however they want to.

This summer, I am also leaning into more Vitamin Joy. I am adding in more beach time, more time with the niece and nephews, and a lot more time doing ridiculous jumps into swimming pools and even into the ocean (see my Instagram for more).

I just wrapped Season Two of Vitamin Joy Podcast and still hosting Wild Ideas Worth Living by REI Co-Op every other week. I am taking a dose of my own medicine and taking a break from everything else to work on a big project. It requires me to focus and chunk out blocks in 90 minute increments (as per Vitamin joy guest Steven Kotler’s instructions), and even turning off my phone, as Courtney Carver suggested. If anyone has any more tips on FOCUSING, I’d love to hear them! I’d also love to hear what shows you loved and what you want to hear more of when I launch Season 3 of Vitamin Joy this winter.

In the meantime, I hope you are all having a wonderful summer. Here are a few things that I’ve been into lately.

PODCASTS

  • Tim Ferriss interviews Chip Wilson of Lululemon – I have always been a big Tim Ferriss fan and spent some time with Chip when Lulu first came to the U.S.A. so I found this conversation fascinating.

  • The Andrew Huberman Show – I love how Dr. Huberman who runs the Huberman Lab at Stanford explains how our brains and bodies work and how to optimize for sleep and performance. Did you know staring at horizons actually calms you down? So cool.

  • Overheard by Nat Geo – The Audio quality of this show is amazing.

  • SubStack Podcast – I think Substack is a super cool company and I know the host of this show. In the first interview, they get into a great discussion about book publishing. Did you know 96% of all books today in the market sold less than 1,000 copies? The podcast is also a good example that you can have a podcast with very average audio/music quality, but if you have superior content, people will still listen.

TV SHOWS

  • Alone. I am obsessed with this show as participants are given ten tools and made to survive ALONE in the wild. I have a buddy, Joel Van Der Loon in Season 7, so devouring this season as they try to survive in the Canadian Arctic. Most impressive is that two of the final survivors are BADASS women I’d love to be friends with. This show makes me want to get wild.

BOOKS FOR SUMMER

  • The Year of the Fox – I could not put this book down. Johnny also read it even though it’s chick lit. It’s written by this badass woman I know from Raglan, New Zealand. She was the town librarian and super witty. Her sense of humor and strength in this book make it a page turner. So far everyone I’ve gifted to, LOVES it.

  • A Very Punchable Face by Colin Jost – If you want to laugh out loud, just buy this book.

  • Malibu Rising – I have never read a “beach read” like this, but after the year we had my brain loved it. If you surf (or live in Malibu), you may cringe at her surfing analogies, but I couldn’t put it down.

  • The War of Art by Stephen Pressfield – I am working on a creative project and often experience resistance. I am re-reading for the tenth time now. If you are working on something “hard” or creative, this is the bible on breaking through resistance. Bonus is that it’s short.

  • The Breathing Cure by Patrick McKeown – Johnny loves performance books and says this one is the best breathing book he’s read yet.

GEAR

  • Surfer Doll – I used this toy to teach my niece and nephews about waves and currents, and now they want to surf just like this doll. Anyone trying to teach a kid to surf, this $20 doll is a great gift and also available at most surf shops.

  • Sonos ROAM – Sonos sent this portable speaker to me, and the sound is amazing.

  • Reef Women’s Cushion Sandals – Most comfy fashionable , comfy sandals I’ve bought. Everyone stops me about these.

  • Xero Barefoot running shoes – Johnny is a barefoot running geek, and these shoes look cooler than Vibrams. He LOVES them.

  • Altra Women’s Superior Trail Shoes – These are the best trail shoes I’ve owned. Lightweight with a wide toe box and not super ugly like most running shoes.

  • Al Merrick Rocketwide Surfboard – All the boys at the beach keep trying to borrow this board from me. It’s magic.

Wildly with love,

Shelby
